They say there's no place like home for the holidays.  For dogs, however, Christmas (and Christmas dinner) at Lucies Farm Luxury Kennel comes very, very close.  For the 12 days of Christmas, dogs will enjoy a menu of "gourmet holiday meals" that has been created just for them.

Lucies Farm Kennel is the premier resort destination for manís best friend.  Nestled on 57 acres in sunny Worcestershire, this warm, friendly and exclusive facility accommodates only four guests at any one time.  This ensures that each dog receives personal attention and plenty of affection.  "All of our guests get the royal treatment," says Craig Walsh with pride.

Now that Christmas is here, the Walshes are really "putting on the dog" with a bounty of holiday taste treats guaranteed to start tails wagging at the kennel.

Many people understandably want to share the fun of festive eating with their dogs, but worry about feeding them rich scraps from the holiday table.  "And they should," says chef Marjorie who created the special dog-friendly recipes.  "Giving your dogs unfamiliar foods can turn into a holiday horror story." 

Marjorie urges owners to resist the "need to feed" from the table since many human treats can spell disaster for dogs.  Take raisins for example.  Ubiquitous in holiday food, the sweet little fruit morsel is poisonous to dogs.  "And even though some foods may not be life-threatening, they're just not good for your animal," Craig explains, "and can cause real gastric distress."

Recipe for Success

Unfortunately, many commercial dog treats that are offered for the holidays are made with unhealthy, unnatural, non-nutritious ingredients such as animal by-products, derivates, and filler.  Even so-called "natural foods" may have pure ingredients, but the total recipe can lack canine nutritional balance.  

State-of-the-art ESHA nutritional software enables the Walshes to properly formulate and balance all dog products made at Lucies Farm and served to kennel visitors.  But Marjorie is quick to point out that like many "for-people" holiday recipes, Christmas Eve Dog Nog, Stew-licious Christmas Dinner, Chomper's Spice Cookies, Bow-Wow Balls, Poochie's Plum Pudding, Boxing Day Egg-stravaganza and Bowser's Gingerbread Biscotti were not intended as a year-round diet.

"These are special treats.  They don't provide the right balance of nutrition to be eaten regularly," says Marjorie. "They are, however, perfectly healthy and a wonderful way to indulge dogs at 'family' holiday celebrations.Ē

Christmas Eve Dog Nog

Christmas Eve Dog Nog

A special Christmas treat for the guests at our luxury dog hotel.

1                      chicken breast  

6 cups             water  

1 cup               whole wheat flour  

2                      eggs, beaten  

1/8 tsp            parsley, dried  

 Method:

 

  • Boil chicken breast for about 1/2 hour and remove to cool
  • Add flour to chicken water
  • Beat out lumps
  • Add beaten eggs
  • Cook on low heat until it's done thickening
  • Pulverise chicken in food processor
  • Add to flour/egg gravy
  • Add more water if necessary
  • Cool before serving

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Cooking time: 8 minutes

Ready in: 13 minutes (plus cooling)

 

Stew-licious Christmas Dinner

Stew-licious Christmas Dinner                                 

This is a good meal for young dogs. A special treat on the menu at our luxury dog resort.

4 oz                 sweet potatoes  

4 oz                 squash  

2 oz                 celery  

1 cup               diced cooked turkey  

1 oz                 cranberries - fresh or dried

1/4 tsp            calcium*  

2 cups             turkey stock  

1 tbs   whole wheat flour  

Method:

 

  • Dice vegetables and turkey.
  • Lightly boil the vegetables in the turkey stock.
  • Add the diced turkey to the pot.
  • Whisk in the flour and calcium.
  • Simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Add dried/fresh cranberries to finish
  • Allow to cool.

*You may obtain calcium by crushing a calcium tablet or eggshells.  To use shells, wash them and then bake at 150F (gas mark 2) for 30 minutes.  When cold, pulverise the shells in a food processor or with mortar and pestle.

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 18 minutes

Ready in: 28 minutes (plus cooling time)

Bow-Wow Balls with Turkey

Bow-Wow Balls with Turkey                                     

These are particularly good for older dogs. Another special on the menu at our luxury dog resort.

   

250 g              bread or pizza dough  

1/4 cup           turkey broth  

2 tsp   whole wheat flour  

3/4 cup           cooked turkey (chicken may be substituted)

1 cup               mixed vegetables  

1/4 tsp            garlic powder  

1                      egg, beaten  

1/2 cup           cheddar cheese, shredded  

1/2 cup           sesame seeds  

1/2 tsp            calcium*

Method:

 

  • Roll out the dough and cut into 3 inches circles with cookie cutter. 
  • In a saucepan, combine the broth and flour
  • Stir until flour is dissolved and mixture thickens. 
  • Add the turkey, veggies, and garlic powder.
  • Cook until mixture is heated through. (Let cook a bit.)
  • Spoon one to two teaspoonfuls of the turkey mixture onto each circle.
  • Fold up the sides and pinch shut.
  • Roll into a ball shape. 
  • Mix the cheese and sesame seeds in a small bowl.
  • Dip each ball into the beaten egg and roll or sprinkle each ball with the cheese/sesame seed mixture.
  • Arrange the balls on a cookie sheet. 
  • Cook in a preheated 375 degree oven (gas mark 5)  for 10-15 minutes, until they are golden brown.
  • Let cool.
  • Store in the refrigerator.

Boxing Day Egg-stravaganza

A specialty on the menu at our luxury dog hotel for the day after Christmas.

1                      egg  

2 tbs   potatoes, mashed   

1/2 cup           cooked turkey, diced  

1/2 cup           mixed vegetables  

1/4 cup           cheddar cheese, shredded  

1/8 tsp            calcium*  

 

Method:

  • Heat a medium-sized pan with a small amount of olive oil
  • Whisk together the egg and potatoes. Spread in pan 
  • Place turkey and veggies on top in even layers
  • Cover; simmer until egg cooks and the mixture is warm
  • Sprinkle cheese on top, then cook a few more minutes until cheese is melted and egg is golden brown
  • Let cool
  • Cut into wedges
  • Store in refrigerator

*You may obtain calcium by crushing a calcium tablet or eggshells.  To use shells, wash them and then bake at 150F (gas mark 2) for 30 minutes.  When cold, pulverise the shells in a food processor or with mortar and pestle.

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Cooking time: 8 minutes

Ready in: 13 minutes (plus cooling)
