Cream sugar and butter well with electric mixer.

Sift dry ingredients and add to creamed butter and sugar.

Drop pieces the size of a walnut onto a greased cookie sheet about 2" apart.

Bake for 10 - 12 minutes

Allow cookies to cool on sheet for about a minute or two (so that they retain their shape better) before removing with a spatula and placing upside down on a cake rack. Put confectionery sugar (icing sugar) in a sifter. Turn cookies over and sprinkle tops with sugar. Place in air tight tin to retain crispness.
